A neurological disorder in Merino sheep, characterised clinically by progressive posterior ataxia and microscopically by Wallerian degeneration in thoracic segments of the spinal cord, is described. Animals of both sexes were affected, with the earliest onset of disease being at 5 months of age. Most affected animals died before 2 years of age. The clinical, pathological and epidemiological features suggest that this degenerative thoracic myelopathy is a previously unrecognised entity differing from other reported causes of ataxia in sheep in Australia.  相似文献

Forest floors in the temperate climate zone are frequently subjected to strong changes in soil moisture, but the consequences for the soil N cycle are poorly known. In a field experiment we tested the hypotheses that soil drying leads to a decrease of gross N turnover and that natural rewetting causes a pulse of gross N turnover and an increase of N leaching from the forest floor. A further hypothesis was that optimal water availability induced by irrigation causes maximum N turnover and N leaching. Replicated control, throughfall exclusion and irrigation plots were established in a Norway spruce forest to simulate different precipitation patterns during a growing season. Gross N turnover rates were determined in undisturbed soil cores from Oi + Oe and Oa + EA horizons by the 15N pool dilution technique. Forest floor percolates were periodically collected by suction plates. After 142 mm throughfall was excluded, the median soil water potential at the throughfall exclusion plots increased from pF 1.9 to 4.5 in the Oi + Oe horizon and from pF 1.8 to 3.8 in the Oa + EA horizon. Gross ammonification ranged from 14 to 45 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the Oi + Oe horizon and from 4.6 to 11.4 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the Oa + EA horizon. Gross ammonification of both horizons was smallest in the throughfall exclusion plots during the manipulation, but the differences between all treatments were not statistically significant. Gross nitrification in both horizons was very small, ranging from 1.6 to 11.1 mg N kg−1 soil day−1. No effects of decreasing water potential and rewetting on gross nitrification rates were observed because of the small rates and huge spatial variations. Irrigation had no effect as the differences from the control in soil water potential remained small. N leaching from the forest floor was not affected by the treatments. Our findings suggest that ammonification in forest floors continues at considerable rates even at small water potentials. The hypotheses of increased N turnover and N leaching following rewetting of dry forest floor or irrigation were not confirmed.  相似文献

Precisely detecting oestrus is important for artificial insemination. The aims of this study were to identify oestrus‐specific sow mucus proteins to determine the optimal time for artificial insemination. The proestrous‐ and oestrous‐stage mucus proteins were purified and analysed with proteomic tools such as two‐dimensional gel electrophoresis and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization–time‐of‐flight analyses. Among the differentially expressed proteins, the dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase 2 (DDAH2) protein showed a 3.6‐fold increase during the proestrous stage compared to that during the oestrous stage. A western immunoblot study revealed that two of three sow mucus samples clearly showed negative anti‐DDAH2 antibody activity during the oestrous stage. This study demonstrated that the pig DDAH2 mucus protein exists during the proestrous stage, but not during the oestrous stage, suggesting that mucus DDAH2 could be useful as an oestrus detection marker.  相似文献

Users of ELISA test systems applied in eradication schemes must be aware of their potential and their limitations. Means to improve laboratory quality as well as strict performance of the test procedure are essential. Sensitivity and specificity of test systems are limited. Therefore the establishment of a cascade of methods to verify questionable and positive results is important. Thus false positive results, which may threat the general acceptance of an eradication scheme, can be avoided.  相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate whether meat-type rabbits are able to perform treadmill running as a daily routine exercise, and if so, whether the exercise induces specific proportional changes in the fatty acid composition of their muscles. After a four-week training period 8-week-old rabbits were slaughtered and the total activity of plasma lactate dehydrogenase was measured, showing a significant difference between the exercised and control groups (429 +/- 126 IU/l vs. 639 +/- 203 IU/l). Furthermore the fatty acid composition of m. longissimus dorsi (MLD) and m. vastus lateralis (MVL) was determined by means of gas chromatography. Exercise increased the proportions of oleic acid (C18:1 n-9) in both MLD and MVL as compared to the control group. However, the level of stearic (C18:0) and arachidonic (C20:4 n-6) acids significantly decreased in the MVL after the exercise. Changes in the fatty acid profile resulting from the physically loaded condition were of the same tendency in both muscles, adding that the MVL might have been exposed to the exercise more intensively; alterations there occurred in a more pronounced manner. Based on the inference that the composition of membrane structure was also affected, these alterations may have important consequences on meat quality.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was tested for evaluation of the soft tissue structures of the equine digit in 16 limbs, derived from three adult warmblood horses and two newborn warmblood foals. The following measuring sequences were used in sagittal, transversal and coronal planes: spin echo, gradient echo, inversion recovery. The images were made with a 1.5 Tesla Siemens scanner in a CP-Helmholtz circular coil. To compare the visualization of the same tissue structures in adult and in newborn cases the limbs were imaged with the routinely used MRI sequences that are used for mature tissues. In newborn foals the bursa podotrochlearis could not be determined with the used sequences. For both the adult and newborn limbs the most visualization of the same tissue structures including the fluid spaces and growth plates were taken by the inversion recovery sequence. T2 sequence was very informative in adult cases but moderately in newborn foals.  相似文献
